Gonjang Monastery or Ogyen Dho-Ngag Choekhorling is located in Sikkim, a kingdom of hidden treasure. This kingdom merged into India in the year 1975 as 22nd state. Being neighbor country to Nepal and Tibet, the language, tradition, culture and lifestyles of this state has great influence from these two countries.

This monastery is properly located at suburb of Gangtok, the capital town of Sikkim. It is at the height of 5600fts. above sea level and rests on the lap of Gangchen Zodnga the3rd highest the world.

The main entry point begins from Siliguri for Sikkim, which is also the main transport junction for Darjeling and Kalimpong It connects these three important hill stations with other parts of India by air, land and rails. It is 5 hrs. drive from Siliguri to Gangtok. The suburb where the Gonjang Monastery situated is called Bojoghari, which is popularly known as Fatak and it is 6kms.from the main Gangtok town. It is constructed in between a V shaped National Highway 31A that goes to Mangan, Lachen, Lachung, Chungthang and Yumthang.

On reaching Gangtok town, there are two options for getting to Gonjang Monastery. They are;

  • By reserving a taxi individually.
  • By booking a seat in a local Fatak/Gangtok taxi service.

The first one is very easy but it would cost you INR. 80/- upto the monastery. The second one is little bit harder since the drivers will not take anyone to the destination until he gets all the seats booked. This service is available mainly at MG Road and Naya Bazaar. One should always be specific with name of your destination i.e, Fatak and not any other. In this service a passenger is charged INR. 20 to reach Fatak and INR.15 for going back to Gangtok town.
